Do you need any accreditation to run an online school of college? Not necessary. First, online schools need not be accredited at all. They can be placed under the “home school umbrella” giving you the authority to accept students to your online school from anywhere in the country. And online colleges need not be accredited, so says the US Department of Education.
Are you interested in offering a religious curriculum or religious based courses in which case no rules apply? The Jesuits have some of the finest colleges in the world. Religious exemption is used by many online colleges and universities.
Many online colleges and schools use free resources on the internet for their course content, and there are many free courses floating around online.
So how much does it cost to set up an online college or online school? This depends on what you want to do but in general you have three areas of costs:
(1) Legal structure and selection of website delivery of course content. Will you create your own course content or buy it. Will you have some partners to help you create course content? Will you operate your website yourself or need IT staff?
(2) How to craft “Authority to issue degrees” for a college, or how to handle transcripts and diplomas for a school.
(3) Overseas location for college or university. In order to operate an online college or university that you start from scratch, it is best to locate overseas. It is very very difficult for any start-up to have the necessary funds and resources to get any kind of accreditation in the US. Accreditation will have a cost in excess of $100,000 and that doesn’t count the mountains of paperwork, reports, plans etc that are needed. Why be accredited in the US when any foreign Degree is acceptable in the US if it is found to be equivalent to US education by a foreign education evaluator? You do not need it.
The more you can invest in your project, the faster and better it will be.
And raising funds via Crowdfunding could be a way to generate initial funds for starting your online school or college. I can do that too.
I can even give you a complete turnkey online college package, or a turnkey online school for you to get you started. What is a turnkey online school or college? It means I will put the entire package together for you and you will have an online school or college ready to go and ready to accept students! But YOU will have to provide, create, or obtain your own course content, I cannot do that for you.
For schools, you can even be an accredited school, by signing on with one of the various accredited K-12 programs that will basically sell a franchise to you, with a one time fee, or per student charge, or subscription or otherwise. The point is, there are a LOT of ways to be your own online school, and a lot of good pathways.
You can even put your “school” in a building where students can visit for “online tutoring”. And not have to employ any certified teachers. So where do the certified teachers come from? From online providers of K-12 programs, and/or via being a home school they are not needed.
